Oleksandr Usyk has spoken out about the collapse in negotiations for an undisputed fight with Tyson Fury, and insists he is “happy” that the once in a generation clash is not happening.
After months of talks between the respective camps, it was announced towards the back end of March that a four belt unification between Fury and Usyk would not be next, much to the disappointment of boxing fans across the globe.
Despite appearing to bend over backwards to try and get the fight on, Usyk explained he was happy to get some down time when talking to Volodymyr Kobelkov on his YouTube channel.
“I am very happy, by the way. Even though it sounds weird, I am very happy that this fight is not happening and I am going home.”
“You’ve got to understand me, I trained for three months straight. Then I get to come back home and spend time with my children and I just enjoy myself.”
“It was supposed to happen, God tells me this was supposed to happen.”
Usyk remarkably agreed to a 70/30 split in favour of Fury, however issues over the purse share in a potential rematch proved to be a bridge too far and his representatives pulled the plug on the fight.
The unified world champion now looks set to take on mandatory challenger, Daniel Dubois, with the WBA ordering the two teams to enter negotiations this month.
WBC Champion Fury’s next move is unclear, though Queensberry stablemate Joe Joyce appears to be the frontrunner to land a summer dust up with ‘The Gypsy King.’
The likes of Andy Ruiz Jr and of course Anthony Joshua have also been linked to the fight.
