Six-division world champion Oscar De La Hoya has continued his feud with Canelo Alvarez which began when the latter split from De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions in 2020. After almost four years of both sly remarks and directly confrontational videos in the press, the hatred has shown no signs of dying out, with De La Hoya once again gunning for his former fighter.
The Golden Boy Promoter shared the stage with Canelo Alvarez for the first time in five years ahead of a showdown between the undisputed super-middleweight champion and Jaime Munguia, De La Hoya’s new poster boy. The tension was palpable and didn’t take long to spill over as Canelo labelled his nemesis as a ‘scammer who steals from his fighters’.
As tempers increased, De La Hoya referenced two drugs tests that Canelo failed ahead of his famously controversial 2018 fight with Gennadiy Golovkin to further get under the skin of the champion, possibly intending to anger Canelo and distract him from the game plan to better Munguia’s chances in the fight.
Although, inside of the ring, normal service was resumed as Canelo appeared to be almost back to his best after a run of four underwhelming performances, dominating the fight and winning a comfortable unanimous-decision against his countryman to make a third defence of his undisputed crown at 168lbs.
Over a month since that fight, Oscar De La Hoya has now posted a video onto his Instagram where he bragged that Alvarez has ‘lined his pockets’ by fighting Jaime Munguia and told the 33-year-old that he should look a little closer to home when attempting to brand someone as a thief, before adding his thoughts that Alvarez is afraid to take on David Benavidez.
“Canelo, I just saw another video where you are still talking s**t? All that you say is f**k him and f**k that. Aside from defaming me, why don’t you look inside your own circle because I know for a fact that people are stealing from you. By the way, you lined my pockets, you made Munguia a s**tload of money – all because you are afraid of David Benavidez. F**k you.”
“Will @canelo ever get the balls to fight @benavidez300 yes or no? Comment below.”
Benavidez has been vocal in his call-outs of Alvarez, hunting him down for the last couple of years despite the fact that he held the position of WBC mandatory challenger. After much frustration, Benavidez has now given up his pursuit of the pound-for-pound superstar, instead opting to begin a new stage of his career in the light-heavyweight division.
On his 175lb debut this Saturday night, ‘The Mexican Monster’ will face Oleksandr Gvozdyk for the WBC interim light-heavyweight title, meaning a win would likely secure him a shot at the undisputed champion, which is expected to be crowned later this year when Artur Beterbiev goes toe-to-toe with Dmitry Bivol in a battle between the two champions of the division.
