It’s been a challenging few months for Golden Boy CEO Oscar De La Hoya, who is embroiled in public spats with his own fighter Ryan Garcia as well as Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn – a man he has now advised to “stay in the UK.”
De La Hoya’s issues with Hearn really started when Hearn took over the promotion of former Golden Boy charge Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, and since then there has been a steady war of words.
Former multi-weight world champion De La Hoya fulled it recently by accusing Hearn of ‘blowing other people’s money’, while Hearn has stirred the pot and said that De La Hoya’s star fighter, Ryan Garcia, wants to move away from fighting for Golden Boy Promotions.
Speaking to the MMA Hour, De La Hoya is asked what the beef is with Hearn.
“[Laughs] Lonesome Eddie, huh? Lonesome Eddie. There is stuff I can’t talk about because of business but look, he’s a great promoter in Europe. In the UK. Just let me do my job here and let me take care of business, you know.
Cause obviously he doesn’t know the market here. He’s not building anything. He literally just spent I don’t know how many millions of dollars of DAZN’s money and still hasn’t built anything.”
De Lay Hoya went on to assess Hearn’s stable and compares it to the work he has done in the US in the past.
“What fighter has he built other than maybe two or three that are from Europe that don’t resonate here in the US? So let me build my champions. Let me build the biggest fights, like [Floyd] Mayweather, the Bronze Bomber, Errol Spence, [Saul] Canelo [Alvarez].
Let me do my job, I discovered Ryan Garcia and I have like 10 other kids coming up that are going to be amazing. Let me do my job here in the US and you stay in the UK. That’s it.”
