Six-division world champion and founder of Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar De La Hoya, has revealed his ideal opponent for the poster boy of his firm, Ryan Garcia, ahead of a showdown on Super Bowl weekend.
Garcia suffered the first defeat of his career on his last outing, a stoppage loss to Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis back in April, in one of the biggest pay-per-view events of 2023.
Now, ‘King Ry’ appears focussed to bounce back and claim a world title in the super-lightweight division, where all four belts have changed hands in the last twelve months.
In an interview with Fight Hub, De La Hoya revealed plans for Garcia to fight on Super Bowl weekend, but admitted that the 25-year-old would need a high-profile dance-partner in order to do so.
“There is a huge weekend on Super Bowl weekend. We are talking to some people and I strongly feel that the only fighter who can headline such an event would be Ryan Garcia, on Super Bowl weekend, which would be incredible, it would be amazing. Obviously it all depends on the opponent, it has to be for a world title, it has to be against a huge name.”
“So we will see what plays out, but Ryan and Teo [Lopez] would be a lot of fun.”
Although, De La Hoya also revealed his ideas of alternate opponents, should a clash with Lopez fail to manufacture.
“You have fighters like [Devin] Haney, you have fighters like Rolly [Romero], it’s funny because you also have a fighter in [Adrien] Broner! Him [Garcia] and Broner would be [massive], imagine that press conference, imagine that fight. Broner is still a live dog in this business.”
Super Bowl LVIII is set to take place on Sunday 11th February in Las Vegas, meaning De La Hoya is likely to stage a Garcia card on February 10th in Sin City.
