Oscar De La Hoya has branded Floyd Mayweather a ‘f***ing dumbass’ for his take on Ryan Garcia and Gervonta Davis.
The two young, undefeated fighters are set to face off in Sin City on April 22 at a catchweight of 136lb in what has the potential to be the biggest boxing event of 2023.
Both Davis and Garcia boast some impressive names in their respective teams, and, with the promotion in full swing, the trash talk has begun.
A video of Mayweather discussing the fighters’ star power was doing the rounds recently, with the 50-0 retired pro claiming there was no real comparison.
“Tank got his followers from kicking ass. Ryan Garcia got his from YouTubers. There’s a difference. So you wanna be a YouTuber, or you wanna be a fighter? Tank is a fighter.”
De La Hoya – also a multiple weight world champion like Mayweather – clipped the video and responded to it, highlighting his foe’s exhibition career.
“So Ryan Garcia’s not a fighter? He’s been fighting since he was six years old. He has 200+ amateur fights.
“I don’t care where his followers come from, if they come from f***ing Mars, the fact is his followers are selling this fight.
And plus, don’t you remember you fought YouTubers? Are you putting YouTubers down? You profited from them. I can’t with you dude, you’re a f***ing dumbass. I can’t wait. April 22, Ryan Garcia’s f***ing knocking out Tank Davis.”
Although Mayweather’s current relationship with ‘Tank’ is rocky and relatively confusing, it doesn’t change the fact that we was his protege.
It adds yet another layer of intrigue to the bout, considering he and De La Hoya fought in 2007, well before trading these jabs outside of the ring.
Mayweather won the super welterweight world title that night in Las Vegas in what became the most financially successful boxing event of its time.
If the Davis-Garcia card gets even a sniff of that success, all involved in the business side of things will be happy. For the fighters though, it’s all about the win.
