The longest unbeaten run of recent times is over. Long-reigning WBC strawweight champion Wanheng Menayothin had felt jaded and wanted to retire unbeaten but was forced to fight on by his promoter – with catastrophic results.
That move backfired on Friday as Wanheng (54-1, 18 KOs) dropped a unanimous decision to 6-1 underdog and fellow countryman Panya Pradabsri (aka Petchmanee CP Freshmart) at the City Hall Ground at Nakhon Sawan.
Scores were 115-113 on all three cards. In a close one, Panya (35-1, 23 KOs) won through with his fundamentals, excelling behind a stiff jab and ghosting out of harm’s way.
Wanheng had been champion since November 2014, reeling off 12 successful defences until running into his fellow Thai.
