A potential fight between Ryan Garcia and Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis is the hottest subject in town right now and Shawn Porter has had his say.
The former World Welterweight champion, who retired last year, is a popular face and voice on the circuit who works as a pundit and has his own podcast called The Porter Way.
Just prior to Garcia facing Javier Fortuna at the weekend Porter sat down with Fight Hub TV to talk about the potential mega-fight between ‘KingRy’ and ‘Tank’.
“I don’t think he can beat Tank Davis. He’s saying he’s gonna knock him out. He’s selling the fight.”
“If he loses to Tank Davis… it’s how he loses. If he loses a split, if it’s a draw… if the worst doesn’t happen and he doesn’t get knocked down and he just loses the fight, puts up a great fight, a lot like Rolly.”
Comparison between Garcia and Romero
Porter was referring to Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero. The outspoken 26-year-old talked the talk in the build-up to his fight against Gervonta Davis two months ago. Despite a good showing Tank’s power was far too much to contend with and in the sixth round the fight was over.
‘Showtime’ Porter can see a comparison between Garcia and Romero.
“Prior to the fight we were like this guy’s a clown. After it we were like he did more than we expected, salute to him. They’ll do the exact same thing with ‘KingRy’. It’s unfortunate that it takes that type of fight for him to be accepted by the entire boxing world.”
After Garcia’s own sixth round victory on Saturday night his promoter Oscar De La Hoya took to social media encouraging fans to get behind a fight against Davis.
The 49-year-old then said he planned to reach out to representatives of the Baltimore fighter in the hope that a fight can be made. However, one of many obstacles that would need to be overcome is what weight it would be at.
On Saturday Garcia’s win came at 140lbs (Super Lightweight) and the 23-year-old said afterwards he would not return to the 135lb Lightweight division where Davis holds the WBA ‘Regular’ title.
