Shawn Porter Sends Joseph Parker Advice Ahead Of Deontay Wilder Fight

Former welterweight world champion Shawn Porter thinks Joseph Parker needs to do a couple of things to give himself a chance against big-hitting American Deontay Wilder.

The fight is one of many big-time fights on the Day of Reckoning card in Saudi Arabia this weekend.

Parker has been active in the last 12 months fighting twice before now, whilst Wilder hasn’t fought just one round in the last two years, and that is a fact many Parker fans are clinging to.

Speaking on The Porter Way, ‘Showtime’ gave Parker some advice on how to approach the fight.

“My game plan, if I was Joseph Parker, use your jab, use your feints, and try and land something early. You land something early and get back on your movement.”

He then addressed the issue of potential ring rust.

“With Deontay being out of the ring as long as he has been – I talk about having fights in the gym but there is still that one element you can’t really simulate which is the energy and the moment of the fight.

“So if you’re Parker, use your jab, use feints, don’t allow Deontay to find his rhythm. It’s been too long. He’s going to have to find his range. If he lands something early he might have some success and this fight could go some rounds.”

Few people are backing Parker, including former opponent Derek Chisora who thinks the New Zealander might take some early rounds but that ultimately Wilder’s power will come to the fore.
