Queensberry Promotions and Top Rank have beaten Matchroom Boxing in today purse bids with a historic offer to stage the Tyson Fury-Dillian Whyte WBC world title fight.
At the fourth time of asking the bids went ahead today (6pm UK time) and Frank Warren who co-promotes Fury along with Bob Arum at Top Rank have gotten the last laugh it would seem.
The Queensberry/TR bid was a mammoth $41 million dollars with Matchroom bidding $32.2 million. And as had previously been reported the split is 80% to the champion and 20% to the challenger. Fury will receive over $30 million while Whyte will receive a career high $8.2 million.
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed that this is the biggest purse bid in boxing history.
From their Twitter account Top Rank immediately posted their good news. “Queensberry and Top Rank are delighted to announce that WBC and lineal world heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury, will defend his titles against Dillian Whyte following today’s purse bids.
“A venue and date for the fight will be announced in due course.”
The fight is expected to be shown on ESPN, who Fury has a contract with, in the USA and BT Sport Box Office in the U.K.
ESPN’s Mike Coppinger tweeted that the fight is being eyed for April at the Principality Stadium, Cardiff.
This deal now paves the way for Anthony Joshua to rematch Oleksandr Usyk in his own bid to get back the three world heavyweight titles he won last year.
