Former heavyweight star Hasim Rahman has given his prediction for the potential fight between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and David Benavidez.
Having already beaten Caleb Plant earlier in 2023, Benavidez is riding high off the back of his most recent fight which saw him become the first man to stop Demetrius Andrade.
Multi-weight world champion and current undisputed super-middleweight star Canelo was last out against Jermell Charlo in a straightforward 12-round points win.
He is now looking for his next opponent for May 2024, with Benavidez a natural choice and an exciting match-up but unlikely to come around that quickly.
The two-time champion and now mandatory challenger is much more likely to get his shot at Canelo in September, or even further down the line according to the man himself.
Speaking to Pro Boxing Fans, the former two-time world heavyweight champion Rahman was asked about what would happen should Benavidez and Canelo meet and he didn’t hesitate with his answer.
“I definitely think Benavidez will win that fight.”
He did however caveat that with his thoughts that the fight might not happen at all.
“I don’t like that fight for Canelo and I don’t really think Canelo likes that fight so I don’t think he will take that fight. Canelo is a cash cow, nobody can make him fight Benavidez.”
The boxing world will hope that Rahman is wrong. Most believe this fight represents the best that can be made in the super-middleweight division, although former ‘Canelo’ opponent John Ryder is backing the man who beat him.
