Warrington’s Rocky Fielding pulled off an excellent win this past weekend, travelling to Germany to tear the WBA ‘Regular’ World super middleweight title away from champion Tyron Zeuge, showing great determination to stop the undefeated German in five hard fought rounds.
Zeuge made a confident start to the bout, looking sharp and was first to the punch for the first two rounds. However, the home favourite looked to be starting to feel Fielding’s power in the third and began to unravel.
In the fourth round, a crisp short left hook from Fielding had the much shorter Zeuge in trouble for the first time in the contest as he continued to pick up the pace, ending the session in full-control.
After having his man hurt in the previous round, Fielding started to plant his feet in the fifth, using his powerful hooks to good effect at short range.
Shortly after, a terrific left uppercut from Fielding took the wind out of the German’s sails and Rocky let loose with a barrage of unanswered blows to force the stoppage with 30 seconds to go in the session.
It’s been a tough two-and-a-half years for Fielding since he was demolished by Liverpool rival Callum Smith, but he has pushed on regardless, showing good character to win British and Commonwealth titles – and forced himself into the frame at World level.
The rebuilding job has taken place under the guidance of, firstly, Oliver Harrison and then, more recently, with Jamie Moore and Nigel Travis, has been nothing short of excellent – and each man deserves tremendous credit for Fielding’s success.
A happy team makes for a successful team: and Moore is doing a great job.
With seasoned, World-level stablemates Martin Murray and Carl Frampton (among others), it is clear that their invaluable experience has obviously helped Rocky immensely.
Fielding is now a viable player in the stacked British ranks at World level in the super middleweight division; which include WBA ‘Super’ champion George Groves, Callum Smith (who will meet Groves in the final of the World Boxing Super Series), James DeGale and Chris Eubank Jnr.
Let the games begin…
