Regis Prograis could be on the cusp of returning to the ring and promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed that his next opponent could be a British fighter.
Prograis most recently fought at the end of last year when he put his super lightweight title on the line against Devin Haney. He got soundly beaten and lost every round according to all three judges.
The 35-year-old from Louisiana has also fought the likes of Jose Zepeda, Tyrone McKenna and Terry Flanagan. His only other loss was a much closer one and it came in a superb contest against Josh Taylor back in 20219 in London for the IBF, WBA and WBC world titles.
Speaking to Boxing News, Hearn was asked about messages posted online by Prograis about fighting Subriel Matias in Las Vegas in 2025, Dalton Smith for the WBC silver lightweight title in 2025 in Saudi Arabia.
“I was wondering, where has 2024 got to? We’re exploring Dalton Smith against Regis Prograis next, already. Regis will come back in July, August time, something like that. He’s still a big player in the division.
“We’re well locked in at 140, I love Dalton Smith against Regis Prograis, I love Subriel Matias against Regis Prograis, but a lot of these guys have got fights ahead, in particular, Subriel Matias, he has to beat Liam Paro first which will not be easy.”
It seems as though there are plenty of routes back into big fights for the former world champion in the near future.
