Canelo Alvarez’s trainer Eddy Reynoso has insisted that Billy Joe Saunders is ‘no Floyd Mayweather’ after the WBO champion suggested the Mexican marvel has serious issues with boxers, ahead of their May 8 encounter at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Reigning WBC and WBA Super 168lbs title holder Alvarez suffered the sole loss of his professional career when he was outfoxed and outboxed by the wily Mayweather in 2013, subsequently labouring against slick southpaw Erislandy Lara.
But the Mexican has improved immeasurably since those struggles and master trainer Reynoso has baulked at Saunders’ comments that Canelo has a vulnerability against slick movers, which he plans to exploit early next month.
“The [Canelo] from back then is very different from the one we see now and Saunders is not Mayweather, it’s that simple,” Reynoso told ESPN Deportes.
“It will be a difficult fight because Saunders is a champion at 168 pounds. It will be a [testing] fight but in the end the quality of Saul and the strength that he has will see him prevail.”
