This weekend May 5th was to be the rematch everybody was waiting for Gennady Golovkin’s highly anticipated fight with ‘Canelo’ Alvarez for middleweight supremacy and pound for pound status as boxing’s very best.
Saul Alvarez has a lot to answer for, and the ridiculous six-month ban given to him for twice failing a drug test for banned substance clenbuterol hardly makes amends or the laughable excuse of contaminated meat eaten by the boxer.
Golovkin and fans of boxing have all been robbed of what should have been a crowning glory for the sport and the reputation of Alvarez will always be in doubt.
Boxing as a worldwide sport is on a high and thriving but selfish acts of cheating with performance-enhancing drugs should not be tolerated and meaningless bans of six months for a fighter that competes twice a year are completely meaningless.

Golovkin widely thought the winner in the first fight has to now concentrate on a very different challenge in the shape of Vanes Martirosyan who steps in as a replacement for the disgraced Alvarez who at 27 years of age can only benefit from a break.

It is unfortunately hard to get excited about Martirosyan chances although a good fighter who has never been stopped in 40 bouts with only three losses and a draw to top super welterweights Erislandy Lara, and undefeated fighters Demetrius Andrade and Jermall Charlo.
Martirosyan will give an account of himself in the early stages but the very professional Golovkin will be in business like mood to get a stoppage in the middle to late rounds.
