Two boxing experts had similar takes about Rolando Romero’s chances in a prospective welterweight boxing world championship defense against Devin Haney.
The 147-pound boxers are both riding considerable momentum of late, with Rolly’s extraordinarily disciplined and mature decision win over Ryan Garcia last year, and Haney’s bounce-back from a brutal defeat to Garcia by beating Jose Ramirez and Brian Norman in back-to-back bouts.
A fight between Romero and Haney has been mooted for much of the year, with Rolly’s WBA world title on the line.
While Haney is a pound-for-pound entrant and a probable favorite when the betting lines open, it’s actually a 50:50 fight according to both boxing sensation Keyshawn Davis and Hall-of-Famer Roy Jones Jr.
A WBO lightweight world champion and silver medalist from the 2020 Olympic Games, Davis said, when it comes to Romero vs Haney, “I got it 50/50. Definitely 50/50 fight.”
He added: “I’ve been talking to Rolly on the phone, I know how serious he is.”
For Jones, a thunderous knockout puncher in his day, it comes down to whether Romero can land his more powerful shots.
“If Rolly can catch Devin early or hurt Devin, a it can become a 50/50 fight,” Jones told Fight Hub TV.
“Rolly is knock off version of Prince Naseem, if he hit you, you’ll know you’ve been hit.”
The Romero vs Haney fight is rumored to take place May 30 in Las Vegas. The fight would be a unification considering Rolly’s WBA belt and Haney’s WBO would both be on the line.
