Roy Jones Jr has reflected on his own career following witnessing the end of the Puerto Rican legend, Miguel Cotto’s career.
Miguel Cotto was a 4-weight world champion, exactly the same number of world titles Roy Jones Jr has won. Cotto was upset in his final foray into the squared circle. Sadam Ali triumphed with a unanimous decision victory against Cotto, outclassing him with his work rate to obtain the WBO jr middleweight world title.
Following the bout, the jumbo screens inside Madison Square Garden played a tribute video. It was similar to a farewell video, which celebrated his career.
Roy Jones Jr who is actually 13 years senior to Cotto has shared he has no plans to hang up his gloves anytime soon, furthermore, he doesn’t want anything similar to the video tribute Cotto received in Madison Square Garden.
Speaking exclusively with BoxingScene.com, the future hall-of-fame fighter said that he intends to be fighting ‘in his coffin.’
“I don’t want no farewell video. When I’m in the coffin you can talk about my stuff. I don’t want to go, I want to still be fighting and be in the coffin throwing punches at people. I don’t want to go out like that [with a farewell event], that’s their stuff, I don’t do all that,” Jones told BoxingScene.com.
Former 6-weight world champion, Oscar De La Hoya shared that he would come out of retirement for a bout against Conor McGregor. Additionally, ‘The Golden Boy’ said he would stop the Irish UFC champion inside of two rounds.
On that topic, Roy Jones Jr says he is in no place to say Oscar De La Hoya shouldn’t return to the ring, when he, himself is rapidly approaching his 50’s and is still an active fighter.
“How can I tell him not to do it when I’m still doing it? I can’t tell him don’t do it when I’m still doing it too,” Jones added.
