Roy Jones Jr was last in the news for parting ways with old protege Chris Eubank Jr ahead of his rematch with Liam Smith, however has now linked up with another high profile fighter.
Scheduling clashes [allegedly] were to blame for Eubank and Jones not being able to work together ahead of the clash at the Manchester Arena, however there has not seemed to be any intention from either to re establish a working relationship.
That now looks fully dead in the water, after Jones announced this week he has been working with a fighter from the same division as Eubank, WBC middleweight world champion, Jermall Charlo.
Speaking to Sporting Post about the link up, Jones said:
“I’m working with Jermall Charlo right now, and the hardest thing is to teach him and buy into the different things that you’re teaching. Because when someone’s used to winning a certain way, they want to stick with that way but It’s going really well.”
“He tries so hard to learn the things I’m teaching and he’s asking the right questions. He’s a hell of a student and I’m looking forward to him getting his mind back right, improving and getting back on the right path. I think his mind got a little side tracked and he got off the right path for a minute.”
“My goal is to get him back on the right path because when he’s on the right path, he’s a monster and hard to beat.”
Charlo had been in advanced talks to challenge Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez for his undisputed super middleweight championship, before he withdrew at the last hour and twin brother Jermell got the shot instead.
Though he is undoubtedly a talented fighter, Jermall has been out of the ring for three years and Jones has his work cut out if he is to return him to the top level.
