Roy Jones Jr spoke out this week about the possibility of him training Anthony Joshua – and revealed that ‘potential conversations’ had taken place about the link up.
Speaking to IFL TV in Abu Dhabi, Jones kept the door open to training Joshua, as well saying that some time out of the ring is just what the former unified world champion needs.
“We’re having some potential conversations, and I told him [Joshua] I think him not fighting for a while is a great idea because why would you go back in the same guy? Go back, work on yourself , then come back and fight -that makes more sense.”
Promoter Eddie Hearn put forward that AJ would return to action in late December, however in recent interviews admitted that his charge wouldn’t fight again until February next year at the earliest.
Despite his best efforts to rectify the wrongs of their first meeting, Joshua ultimately succumbed to the same fate in his rematch with Oleksandr Usyk in August.
However, Jones believes he is the man to bring about the changes that Joshua was unable to make ahead of the rematch.
“For me, he [Joshua] has so much talent and is so underdeveloped. So if I can get him and do the same thing with him as I did with Eubank, turn him into a different style of fighter, then I think we’ve got something.”
“He definitely has the body type for it and he definitely has the heart for it; it’s just about having the knowhow.”
Even though he’s coming off two defeats, Joshua is still one of the main attractions in boxing and a rumoured mega-fight against Deontay Wilder could possibly be the biggest clash in the sport.
