Terence Crawford backs himself against any boxer past or present, and fans are beginning to come around to the idea too.
The Nebraska native is the star of 2023 when it comes to boxing, a one-sided win over Errol Spence Jr to become undisputed champion in a second weight class his crowning moment.
With only a few fights left before he hangs up the gloves, fighters, fans and pundits are beginning to wonder if there’s any man who poses him a threat.
Speaking in an interview with RealLyfe Productions, multi-weight world champion and Hall of Famer, Roy Jones Jr, initially said it would only be a much bigger man who has a chance.
He then presented Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis as an option if the fight were to take place just under Crawford’s current welterweight class.
“Crawford … I don’t see nobody around that’s gonna beat him unless it’s somebody way bigger than him, but don’t sleep on the fact that if him and Tank fought at about 145, that’s a good damn fight. You understand me? Cause they both have very high IQs, and Tank is very explosive. That’s the one thing Tank got that Errol didn’t have.”
Despite having fought at 140, ‘Tank’ is significantly smaller than Crawford in both height and frame. Jones believes any difference is nullified by the explosiveness the Baltimore puncher, using his own title success in four weight classes as a perfect example.
“In boxing, an explosive fighter can go a lot of places. I was only able to cover the weights that I covered because I was explosive. If I wasn’t explosive, I couldn’t have covered that much weight. Explosiveness keeps people in check.”
Perhaps unfortunately for fans – and despite a brief back and forth – it’s a fight that’s unlikely to ever come together. Crawford has made it explicitly clear that he’s focused on moving up rather than down
