Ryan Garcia has split with trainer, Joe Goossen, after just three fights under his guidance.
Garcia fell short in the biggest bout of his career recently, touching the canvas in round two and round seven against Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.
It was a body shot that ended proceedings just after the halfway stage – a crisp hook to the ribs that saw Garcia take a knee and watch as the referee counted him out.
There are differing opinions from analysts as to whether he had the ability to continue, however new footage hints that he was fighting with an injury. Whatever happened, Garcia tasted defeat for the first time in his career.
As ‘Tank’ celebrated, many fans noted that Garcia was left to face the media essentially alone – his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, and Goossen notably absent from the post-fight press conference.
ESPN first reported today that Garcia had decided to split from Goossen – who trained him for victories over Emmanual Tagoe and Javier Fortuna before the Davis fight – and the fighter has now confirmed the news by sharing it on both Twitter and Instagram.
Goossen has worked with Riddick Bowe, Shane Mosley and Gabriel Ruelas in the past.
Garcia has not yet spoken on the decision, why it was made, or who might be the next man in his corner. One potential, ironically, is Calvin Ford, the man who trains Davis.
Ford told Fight Hub TV that he would welcome Garcia ‘with open arms’ because of the heart he showed in taking the ‘Tank’ fight.
The 23-1 fighter is now expected to move up to the 140lb ranks to mix it with the likes Josh Taylor, Regis Prograis and Teofimo Lopez.
