Ryan Garcia’s trainer Joe Goosen has provided some insight to how his charge’s camp has gone ahead of his mega fight with Gervonta Davis this weekend, and admits some of Garcia’s sparring partners have been getting a sore touch.
After months of online back and forth, and a topsy turvy negotiation process that looked certain to collapse, the two young stars will lock horns at the T-Mobile Arena this weekend in what is by far and away the biggest fight of the year so far.
Speaking at the final press conference this week, esteemed trainer Goosen revealed Garcia has been “destroying” sparring partners in preparation for the crunch clash with Davis.
“The sparring has been going great, I mean he really has destroyed a lot of sparring partners. But he’s got that something special about, that hard to define “it” quality.”
“I just can’t see him doing anything other than winning this fight on Saturday night.”
Garcia and Davis will lock horns at a catchweight of 136lbs this Saturday night, with a 10lb rehydration clause reportedly in place at the request of ‘Tank.’
These terms have come under heavy criticism from certain observers, given the fact both men have fought at the super lightweight limit of 140lbs in recent fights.
Whether these terms are fair or not, the consensus is that boxing fans across the globe are just relieved the mouthwatering contest will take place, after looking almost dead in the water at one stage.
There is also the possibility the pair could do it all over again, with a one way contractual rematch clause in place if Garcia manages to spring the upset and defeat Davis in Las Vegas this weekend.
