Super-lightweight contender Ryan Garcia is preparing for his first world title challenge against undefeated countryman Devin Haney for the WBC 140lb title, but he has revealed that there is one man in the weight-class who he will never face in the ring.
‘King Ry’ was expected to face Rolando Romero up until a couple of weeks ago, where it was confirmed that the WBA champion would instead face Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz on March 30th in the first defence of his title after controversially stopping Ismael Barroso last year.
As a result, Garcia revisited the bout with Devin Haney, which initially looked to be off following supposed advice from Floyd Mayweather Jr. Their clash has now been given the go-ahead, in what is expected to be one of the most high-profile clashes of 2024.
Speaking to Jack Alter ahead of the fight, Garcia revealed that he will never again offer Romero the chance to fight him and become a superstar in his own right, labelling the outspoken champion as both ‘stupid’ and ‘weird’.
“F**k Rolly Romero, dude. I’m not going to ever fight him. I’m never going to give him any of that.
“He’s f***ing ridiculous, he’s so stupid, bro. You’re 30 and you’re out there wearing fur coats like calm down bro. If you’re 30 and you’re wearing fur coats, you’re weird.
“Fix your f***ing wardrobe before you speak to a real one like that, for real, and don’t use the N-word, he ain’t even black.”
Haney-Garcia will take place in Las Vegas on April 20th and will be available to watch live on DAZN PPV, as ‘The Dream’ seeks to make a first successful defence of the WBC belt.
