Ryan Garcia has revealed who he is ideal training partner would be, citing one of the all time greats from years gone by.
‘King Ry’ans time in camp will be coming to a close now, as the biggest fight of his career vs Gervonta Davis on April 22nd draws ever nearer.
Speaking to Mike Tyson on his podcast Hotboxin’, Garcia named the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson as the fighter he would have loved to train with above all others.
“I would want to train with Sugar Ray Robinson. One of my favourite fighters was Muhammad Ali, and he said Sugar Ray Robinson was the best fighter ever.”
“So I’m thinking ‘I thought you were!'”
Leonard’s remarkable CV makes a mockery of those of some current fighters. He had a mind boggling 199 professional fights, winning 174 and landing 109 knockouts.
Best known for his wars against ‘The Raging Bull’ Jake LaMotta, Robinson sadly passed away in 1989 at the age of 78.
Garcia will hope he can channel some of Robinson’s fighting spirit, as he goes into the clash with Davis as an underdog int he eyes of most observers.
The contest will take place at a catchweight of 136lbs, and the universal opinion in the sport is that this is to the smaller man Davis’ advantage.
Furthermore, a 10lbs rehydration clause is in place, which is thought to be of further detriment to Garcia who, at 5’10, stands around 5 inches taller than ‘Tank.
Garcia and Davis are two of the biggest stars in the sport, and their bout is tipped to generate huge numbers in both pay per view sales, as well as sell out the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
There is also exists the potential they could do it all over again, with a one way rematch clause in place if Garcia upsets the bookmakers’ odds and finds a way to overcome Davis in just over a week’s time.
