Still riding high off his huge upset win this past weekend, Ryan Garcia has now given his opinion on who would win between his two former opponents Gervonta Davis and Devin Haney.
Garcia’s stunning victory came at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn after one of the wildest build-ups to a fight in recent memory.
It was marred by Garcia’s odd antic, by him turning up to the press conference on a horse, by him accusing Haney of fighting only for belts and not legacy, sharing private sparring videos, insulting Haney’s religion and much more.
Garcia also claimed to have been cut off from his money and his phone in one particularly upsetting video and at the final press conference he engaged in insalubrious altercations with members of the crowd as well as sipping on a beer during the ceremonial weigh-in before the fight and admitting he had been smoking and drinking throughout camp.
Despite all this, when it came down to fight night, he was impressive from the off. He wobbled Haney badly in the first round with his famously quick and shape left hook and then went on to knock down the former undisputed lightweight champion turned WBC super lightweight belt holder three times.
Haney connected only once or twice with Garcia but never really hurt him. Though Garcia did play act a little during the fight, turning his back several times later on and even having a point deducted for hitting on the break, he took the points victory with two of the three judges rolling in his favour and one opting for a draw, though Haney retains the belt as Garcia did not make weight.
Garcia has now been speaking to the PBD Podcast and given his views on a match-up between Haney and Davis, who beat Garcia in April last year by knockout.
“Haney beats Tank. Boxing is a wild sport. Haney beats him out of just pure volume. Just knows how to use his reach good.
“Tank would try to hurt him, but, I don’t think Tank would get to Haney. Definitely Haney would beat Tank. I know everybody will say oh Ryan’s crazy again, but if it happens, I have Haney.”
Garcia then ribbed ‘Tank’ and said that he had a much smaller profile than he does and that he is little known outside of the USA, while he claims to have followers all over the world.
“I’m cooler than him, I know how to promote better.”
He was also asked about a rematch with Haney.
“We have to let him recover, I heard I broke his jaw.”
