Ryan Garcia’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya has provided an update on the wellbeing of ‘King Ry’, ahead of his bout with Devin Haney, after a string of uncharacteristic outbursts from Garcia that sparked concerns over both his mental health and whether he should fight.
Garcia suffered a first career defeat when he faced Gervonta Davis last year, but just one fight and twelve months later, he finds himself in another mega fight, challenging for world honours for the first time in his career against WBC super-lightweight champion Haney.
However, ahead of the contest, Garcia has posted pictures of himself smoking marijuana and made allegations of a conspiracy involving an ‘elite club’ that have shown him heinous crimes, reportedly leading to Garcia being checked into a psychiatric ward.
In an interview with Fight Hub, De La Hoya explained that he has been in contact with ‘King Ry’ and that his preparation has not been interrupted, with fight camp now beginning and full focus being on Haney and his pursuit of the super-lightweight title.
“I’ve been in touch with Ryan, I spoke to him yesterday. He looks good, he looks ready, I’m telling you. All I know is that he left to [go to fight] camp yesterday and he’s with Derrick James and he’s with his whole team.
One thing about Ryan is that he has been training and there’s about six to seven weeks left to train and be ready for this fight on April 20th.
“That is perfect timing. In my history, when I was fighting, I needed five to six weeks in camp, it is perfect timing, it is all good. We will see Ryan up in the ring on April 20th.
Haney-Garcia will go ahead in Brooklyn, New York in six weeks’ times, and there are plenty of fighters willing to step in and replace Garcia, should he pull out.
