Ryan Garcia’s upset win over Devin Haney has seen him become the most talked about fighter in the sport. To maintain this, he has been calling out every name under the son, with Errol Spence Jr the latest opponent that he has demanded.
Garcia missed weight by over three pounds ahead of his showdown with Haney but went on to shock the world and deliver a career-best performance, dropping ‘The Dream’ for the first, second and third time of his career on his way to a majority-decision win that few saw coming.
During the aftermath, many fans and fighters have claimed that the additional weight was a monumental advantage during the contest but Garcia has explained that his body simply does not go any lower than 143lbs and revealed plans to move up to the welterweight division as a result.
Already, Garcia has mentioned clashes with IBF welterweight champion Jaron Ennis, controversial Brit Conor Benn and even a possible move up to super-welterweight where he would take on unified 6”6’ champion Sebastian Fundora.
However, a recently revealed legal dispute between former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr and his coach Derrick James has reared the head of ‘King Ry’, leading to him calling out his stablemate on social media.
“Yeah, Spence has got beef with my coach. What’s good? Come see me. You want to sue my coach? I want to beat you up. Facts.”
Spence was famously defeated in last year’s super-fight against Terence Crawford, for which he earned a reported $25 million through a combination of his guaranteed purse and pay-per-view sales, of which James claims he was owned 10%.
However, ‘The Truth’ has reportedly instead paid James just $350k, causing the 2022 Ring Magazine Trainer of the Year to file a lawsuit and demand $5 million in damages.
This argument has of course led to Spence and James parting ways, with Garcia becoming James’ most high-profile fighter, particularly after Anthony Joshua made the switch to Ben Davison a few months ago. Yet, based off of last weekend’s fight Garcia and James appear to be a match made in heaven after only one fight together.
A battle between Garcia and Spence would be sure to catch attention, particularly with the added narrative of the lawsuit, making for yet another pay-per-view blockbuster featuring the 25-year-old superstar.
Although, Spence struggled to make weight himself for the Crawford fight and plans to move up to 154lbs as a result, meaning Garcia would likely need to make a two-division jump in pursuit of the contest.
Additionally, an injury to Spence has denied him out of a rematch with Crawford, requiring cataract surgery that is likely to keep him away from the ring until the end of the year.
