With 19 stoppages in his 23 wins, Ryan Garcia’s offensive prowess has never been in question.
However, there is a very that ‘King Ry’ is leaky defensively, as highlighted by both his stoppage loss to Gervonta Davis earlier this year and his eventual victory over Luke Campbell in 2021, during which he was floored heavily by the Brit.
When throwing heavy artillery, Garcia has a tendency to forget about what’s coming back at him, which leads to a style that is both fan friendly and extremely vulnerable.
New trainer Derrick James appears to be already well on his way to ironing out those defensive flaws, though, as this recent training footage recorded by ESNews shows.
Garcia parted ways with previous coach Joe Goossen following the Davis defeat back in April, and quickly decided to link up with the esteemed James at his Dallas gym, which boasts the likes of Errol Spence Jr, Jermell Charlo and Anthony Joshua.
In what has clearly been a time for reflection and change for the 24 year old, he’s also announced he will be moving up back up to super lightweight, and has been linked to world title fights against Teofimo Lopez, Regis Prograis and Rolando Romero
The only thing still currently up in the air for Garcia is his promotional situation, with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy filing a law suit against Garcia a matter of weeks ago over a contract dispute, this came after the two traded insults over social media.
