The British super-featherweight title is on the line in this Saturday night’s main event as Sam ‘Bullet’ Bowen faces Jordan McCorry at the Leicester Arena.
Bowen – a native of nearby Ibstock who trains out of Newark, Nottinghamshire with trainer Carl Greaves – captivated the crowd last time out with a stunning fourth-round stoppage victory over Argentine spoiler Horacio Cabral, and will now defend his British title for the first time and extend his record to 15-0 with 11 knockouts in the process.
A win for Bowen – a tenacious, upright combination puncher – would surely facilitate a future Leicestershire ‘derby’ with Lyon Woodstock Jr – who features on the same card – or showdowns with Archie Sharp or Mancunian Zelfa Barrett, all of whom are promotional stablemates currently jostling for domestic super-bantamweight supremacy.
Heavyweight contender Nathan Gorman – who resoundingly outpointed Romanian former World title challenger Razvan Cojanu in his last contest – will be looking to maintain his unbeaten record against the obscure but seemingly heavy-handed Fabio Maldonado of Brazil – a former mixed martial-artist boasting a formidable record of 26 wins with 25 knockouts alongside a solitary points defeat courtesy of Top Rank’s Colombian contender Oscar Rivas, someone who sprung a sensational upset against Bryant Jennings in February to put the rest of the division on notice.
Gorman has repeatedly stressed his desire for a bout with similarly unbeaten rival Daniel Dubois as soon as possible, and a comprehensive victory over the unheralded but patently dangerous Brazilian is therefore essential to set the wheels in motion for a showdown with the Londoner in the near future.
Light-heavyweight prospects Willie ‘Braveheart’ Hutchinson, reputedly one of Scotland’s best amateur prodigies, and Tommy Fury, Tyson’s younger brother in his second professional fight, also feature on the card in addition to undefeated Scouse puncher Sam Maxwell, who is widely expected to dispatch of Kelvin Dotel en route to a potential future showdown with Ohara Davies.
