One of Britain’s most entertaining fighters Sam Eggington returns to action on September 10.
The West Midlands middleweight makes the first defence of his WBC Silver middleweight title against unbeaten Frenchman Bilel Jkitou at the Skydome, Coventry and will be broadcast on Channel 5 in the UK.
Eggington, who sits at 15 in the WBC 160lb rankings, won the belt he currently holds in May beating veteran Carlos Molina over 12 rounds. Trainer and manager to ‘The Savage’ Jon Pegg told Boxing Socialthe Monday after the victory that Molina was one of the toughest men his charge had ever been faced during his 37-fight career and said this regarding the future:
“If there’s a nice defence [of the Silver belt] there, we’ll take it. For the first time in a long time Sam’s the number one priority, not just with me but with a promoter as well.”
Eggington now finds himself as the number one man with Hennessy Sports who will promote next month’s show. On paper the defence against Jkitou could be routine and it will take a dive into YouTube to find footage on France’s number one middleweight. Eggington, though, has slipped up before unexpectedly most notably against Hassan Mwakinyo in a head scratching performance in 2018.
Since then, it has been numbers of seven wins and two defeats for Eggington who harbours ambitions of challenging the very best at 160lbs.
The September 10 undercard also features the return of talented cruiserweight Isaac Chamberlain, the promising Stevie McKenna, former British light heavyweight champion Shakan Pitters and a selection of Midlands boxing talent including Kaisee Benjamin and River Wilson Bent. Also on the bill are Idris Virgo, Brett McGinty, Michael Hennessy Jr and Tommy Welch.
