Following the announcement for the Tyson Fury vs Derek Chisora trilogy fight, many boxing fans have felt let down after expecting the long-awaited clash between Fury and Anthony Joshua.
Those who were anticipating one of the biggest fights in boxing are shaking their heads at Frank Warren and Tyson Fury for making a trilogy fight that seems pointless on paper, given Fury has twice beaten ‘Del Boy’ with relative ease.
On the other hand, some in the sport accept the fight for what it is – a keep-busy scrap for Fury as he prepares for an undisputed clash with Oleksandr Usyk.
Finally, there are some who believe Chisora shouldn’t be written off, although it has to be said that it’s a minority. Probellum Head of Talent, Sam Jones, has said that it’s not a fight he’s excited about.
The former manager of heavyweight contender Joe Joyce has told iFL TV that he believes that ‘The Gypsy King’ has helped out his ‘mate’ Chisora with a payday.
“I hope Derek is getting paid a fortune, I hope it’s great event, I hope it sells out and people have a wonderful night, but I’m not really excited about it, because I’ve watched the previous two fights. I was there ringside for the last time they boxed and it was just one-sided, so you can’t really get excited about it, but it is what it is. I hope Derek’s getting a fortune.
From a boxing fan’s perspective, when you’re thinking Joshua-Fury is going to happen, it really looks like it’s going to happen this time and then you’ve ended up with Tyson Fury against Derek Chisora three.
It’s a bit of a kick in the balls for fans, but it is what it is. Frank Warren got a bit of stick for running down the BoxRec [rankings], but it’s true Derek is a top ten heavyweight. You kind of think ‘why fly somebody else in’ when you can just give it Derek Chisora? That’s what Tyson wanted to do, it’s his mate, they can say that they’re not, but they are, they’re very good pals. Tyson’s given his mate a payday, fair f**ks to them, I hope it’s a great event.”
Whilst the fight has been met with scepticism, that has not halted tickets sales for the event. British fans clearly want a glimpse of their heavyweight world champion, with Frank Warren claiming that over 50,000 tickets sold on the opening day alone.
For those who aren’t attending, the fight will be available to watch live on BT Sport Box Office as The ‘GK’ and Chisora go toe-to-toe for a third time at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on December 3rd.
