Talk of a blockbuster heavyweight card in Saudi Arabia that would feature both Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua vs Deontay Wilder has been incessant amongst boxing fans over the past month.
With both fights having proved extremely hard to make, the idea that fans could be treated to all four of the elite modern heavies in action on the same card almost seems the stuff of fiction
Skills Challenge intend to stage the historic event in December, but there are plenty of hurdles to overcome before the boxing public can get too excited.
And Amer Abdallah, who is driving the plans, told IFL TV that the Saudis would actually rather stage Joshua vs Wilder over Fury vs Usyk, if they could only manage to put on one of the mammoth bouts.
“The fight between ‘AJ’ and Deontay would be a massive fight for boxing. The undisputed fight holds tremendous value and everybody wants to see that, but I think the intrigue of ‘AJ’ vs Deontay, just from their own presence as well, is the fight that everybody wants to see.”
“There are ongoing talks for a couple of different initiatives. If that fight can happen and come to fruition, where everything aligns in terms of the date and venue, then great.”
If it does take place, the event in Saudi would almost definitely be the richest card in boxing history, with a figure of £300 million being rumoured.
