In a recent interview with the Boxing News YouTube channel, undefeated champion Shakur Stevenson did not hold back in sharing his thoughts on Vasiliy Lomachenko. Stevenson, known for his technical skills and confidence both inside and outside the ring, made it clear that he has no intention of facing Lomachenko after a failed negotiation attempt.
During the interview, Stevenson was blunt in stating that while he respects Lomachenko’s achievements in boxing, he does not feel the same way about his attitude outside the ring.
“I’m done with that. He said some things to me, but he didn’t want to go up to the boxing room,” Stevenson declared.
“I consider him to have ‘moved out.’ I respect him for what he’s accomplished in boxing, but I have no respect for him,” Stevenson added.
Shakur Stevenson also referred to Lomachenko’s behavior outside the ring, suggesting that the Ukrainian shows a different attitude when it comes to negotiating major fights.
“He acted like a tough guy outside of the ring, but he didn’t want to negotiate,” Stevenson remarked.
“I don’t see any point for him to box unless he fights me or Gervonta Davis. What else is there for him to do? He could make some easy money, though. Do it if you like it,” the champion concluded.
At 36 years old, Vasiliy Lomachenko holds a professional record of 18 wins (12 KOs), 3 losses, and 0 draws. His last fight took place on May 12, 2024, against George Kambosos in Perth, Australia. Lomachenko secured a victory via TKO in the eleventh round, capturing the vacant IBF lightweight title.
Meanwhile, Shakur Stevenson remains undefeated with a record of 22 wins (10 KOs), 0 losses, and 0 draws. His most recent bout was on July 6, 2024, in Newark, USA, where he defeated Artem Harutyunyan by unanimous decision after 12 intense rounds.
Previously, on November 16, 2023, Stevenson became the WBC lightweight world champion after defeating Edwin De Los Santos by unanimous decision in 12 rounds. Although he has already defended his title, he has yet to face a mandatory challenge for the belt.
Shakur Stevenson’s comments suggest that, in his view, Lomachenko has few significant options left in his career unless he accepts a high-profile fight.
A potential unification bout for the lightweight title between Gervonta Davis and Vasiliy Lomachenko was considered for this November in Las Vegas. However, these plans were halted following Lomachenko’s decision to consider a possible retirement.
