Shakur Stevenson is one of boxing’s brightest young stars but this week he has named the fighter who he thinks had the best prime career in the history of the sport.
Shakur Stevenson is a precocious talent who quickly shot through the ranks and lifted his first world title aged just 26. The current WBC lightweight champion has also held the WBO and WBC super featherweight titles and lifted his first title at featherweight back in 2019.
Although he was recently called out by an unbeaten American, he has struggled to get some of the biggest names and highest-paying contests which is what led him to briefly retire. He then quickly reversed that decision and said he was ready to fight anybody.
Now in a message posted on X, Shakur Stevenson has stated who he thinks had the most glittering career of all fighters in response to a question for a fan who asked which boxer had the best prime.
“Roy.”
Roy Jones Jr was a multi-weight champion who held titles in four weight classes, including at middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight.
He is also the only boxer ever to start his career at light middleweight and go on to win a heavyweight title. He also won a light middleweight silver medal for the United States at the 1988 Summer Olympics.
He fought all the biggest names in the sport from Bernard Hopkins to James Toney to Antonio Tarver and Jeff Lacey. Since leaving fighting behind he has trained fighters such as Chris Eubank Jr and ended his career with a record of 76 fights and 66 wins.
