Shakur Stevenson has taken issue with Oscar De La Hoya who he thinks might have mentioned him for his own gain and now asks ‘was you using me?’
Stevenson might be a current lightweight world champion, but he is in an odd spot right now after a less-than-impressive showing against Edwin De Los Santo in November last year. The Newark native has been searching for a big-name opponent since then and even briefly announced his retirement as a mark of frustration with his lack of action.
Earlier this month he seemed to finally be getting somewhere when, ahead of William Zepeda’s latest successful fight on March 16 against Maxi Hughes, Golden Boy Promotions chief De La Hoya seemed to make an offer to Shakur, though nothing has since materliaslised and it seems like De La Hoya only did so for a bit of online attention.
In a message posted on X, that certainly seems to be Stevenson’s opinion as he called out the behaviour of De La Hoya.
“Yooo @OscarDeLaHoya I still haven’t heard nothing yet about Zepeda fighting me July 6th how can u say my name over and over and not make the fight happen next was u using me to promote your fighter fight or?”
De La Hoya then responded and seemed to say the fight was not fully off the table just yet.
“Zepeda is fighting soon for the second time this year, I’ll talk to your promoter third quarter of this year.”
It seems this one could happen down the line sometime but right now Stevenson remains once again without a big fight to work towards.
