2024 has started slowly for Shakur Stevenson but now the world champion has named a date that he would take on William Zepeda.
Stevenson is the WBC lightweight champion and last fought when he had an underwhelming victory over Edwin De Los Santos in which he was accused of running from his opponent.
Since then he has threatened to quit the sport at frustration at not getting the big fights, but then announced he couldn’t leave the sport he loves behind.
He has offered to step in to take on Devin Haney should Ryan Garcia pull out, and has now been called out by Zepeda who secured a resounding victory over Maxi Hughes this past weekend.
Zepeda’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya from Golden Boy took to social media to lay down the gauntlet.
“Hi @ShakurStevenson this is @williamzepeda2”
Stevenson responded to the post on X with an acceptance for July.
“😂 I’m ready in July let’s make it happen hit my promoter Oscar. He also #1 for the WBC.. A real killer right in front of me and I don’t any opponent lined up lol #StevensonZepeda next let’s make it happen!!”
He then shared his excitement at the prospect of fighting someone everyone is hyping.
“If Maxi Hughes gave Kambosas the fight of his life but Zepeda DESTROYED him how good is Kambosas or the better question is how good is Zepeda? 🤔 I’m excited let’s make #StevensonZepeda next pls – Pressure bust pipes or make diamonds 💪🏾 #ChasingGreatness”
It seems like Shakur may finally have the big fight he has craved so long.
