One of Britains top trainers, Shane McGuigan, has given his prediction for the upcoming all-American catchweight clash between two of the biggest superstars in the sport, Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis and Ryan Garcia.
McGuigan, son of former featherweight world champion, Barry, has trained the likes of George Groves and David Haye during his time in the corner and established himself as one of the country’s top trainers.
In an interview with Boxing King Media, McGuigan offered his thoughts ahead of the much-anticipated fight and stated his belief that the contest may be closer than many of his fellow experts are predicting it to be, but is favouring Davis.
“I think it is a great fight, I am genuinely excited for it as well. There is not many fights that get me excited about boxing anymore, being around it so long, but that is one that I am definitely excited about. Robert Garcia said it, a lot of other people have said it, Eddy Reynoso said the same thing, he [Garcia] has serious power.”
“I’ve seen it up close, I heard those punches landing on the side of Luke Campbell’s head and body, and he said he is a proper, world-class puncher. When you have got that power and that speed, he is a handful for anyone.”
“Then you look at the fights with Gervonta Davis, the fact that Leo Santa Cruz was having a lot of success, he was hitting him a lot, he was working him. So, this isn’t just a complete walkover. I still lean towards Gervonta Davis, but I think if Ryan Garcia can get himself mentally prepared, going in there and believing that he can win it, it’s a genuine proper fight.”
Davis and Garcia will step into the ring on April 22nd, with a rare broadcasting deal in place, meaning fans in the United States can purchase the event on Showtime PPV or stream the card through DAZN.
