Experienced trainer Shane McGuigan has cast his mind’s eye over the upcoming undisputed fight between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury.
This much-anticipated fight comes around on May 18 when both big men will battle it out for all four of the major belts. It will be the first time the heavyweight division has crowned an undisputed champion for 25 years since Lennox Lewis was the last man to hold the honour.
Technical southpaw Usyk of course has already been an undisputed champion down in the cruiserweight division and is now looking to make history and repeat the track at a second weight following solid wins over Anthony Joshua, twice, and Daniel Dubois in his last three outings.
Fury has long called himself the best of his generation and now has the chance to prove it despite a lacklustre showing last time out against boxing debutant Francis Ngannou in October.
Speaking to The Stomping Ground, McGuigan was asked about the fight.
“Fury looks like he’s trained, he looks chiselled up around the face, he has to do that. There are certain fights where he could keep weight on him like against Wilder, who is naturally thin and doesn’t have a high output so he could nullify him and use his string.
“But Usyk doesn’t do that because he’s a slickster so they’ve taken some weight off him so they can match him for footwork and speed. It’s a really exciting fight. I don’t think we walk away from it thinking oh it’s a Gatti-Ward, but from a skill aspect it’s really exciting.”
He was then asked for his prediction.
“On recent form Usyk, I think he might nip it.”
