When making lists for fights they want to see this year, most boxing fans will include Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez answering the call of David Benavidez.
Canelo is undisputed at super-middleweight, but is being chased down by two-time champion Benavidez, who beat Caleb Plant and Demetrius Andrade in good fashion over the last twelve months.
Speaking on the latter to FightHype, three-weight world champion Shane Mosley praised ‘The Mexican Monster.’
“He’s a beast. Not just when he’s fighting but all the time. He has that mentality, and I love watching fighters like that. It was kind of hard for Boo Boo [Andrade] to do that because it’s not his style.”
On the potential of a Canelo fight, Mosley – who lost to the current champion by unanimous decision back in 2012 – is as excited as the fans.
He believes Benavidez may be ‘a little too big’ for his former opponent.
“It’s going to be a great fight. I’m not saying that he’s going to walk through him like he did Boo Boo, but I’m saying it’s going to be a great fight. I know Canelo can crack, and Canelo has good counter-punches. I’ve been in the ring with him.”
“Canelo is very fast; he has good power and good ring IQ. It’s going to make for a great fight. I still think David [Benavidez] might be a little too big for him. He’s too tall, and his arms are too long. That might be a problem. It seemed like it was a problem when Canelo fought Bivol.”
Canelo has specified May and September – his usual fight dates – as his likely outings in 2024. Unfortunately for fans, reports suggest that a Benavidez fight would at least be the later option, if even that.
Other names in the mix are Jaime Munguia – if he can get through John Ryder – Jermall Charlo and Terence Crawford.
