Following on from his defeat to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, it is unclear what Jermell Charlo’s next move will be.
Currently, he remains as the unified WBC, WBA and IBF Super-welterweight Champion, but whether he will stick around in the division or move up to middleweight, or even super-middleweight, on a permanent basis remains to be seen.
Charlo made the brave and brash decision to jump up two weight-classes in unprecedented fashion to take on Canelo in an all-undisputed clash, but lost the bout in a one-sided unanimous-decision win for the Mexican, and was also stripped of his WBO title for taking it.
Since then, his super-welterweight rival, Tim Tszyu, has been upgraded to WBO World Champion and successfully defended his belt this month against Brian Mendoza.
As such, former WBC Welterweight Champion, Shawn Porter, has no doubt in his mind as to what the ‘Iron Man’ should do next.
On his podcast, Porter explained that Tszyu should be the priority opponent for Charlo after their fight was cancelled last December.
“I think it’s got to be Tim Tszyu, in order for you to get that instant credibility back.”
“If you go into a 154lb rematch with [Erickson] Lubin, we are not respecting that. You go back to 154 and fight Mendoza, ain’t nobody caring about that. You’re at the point now in your career where you have got to do things that people care about.”
“Tim [Tszyu] or [Terence] Crawford, we don’t really care [which].”
After demanding the clash for the last twelve months, newly-crowned champion Tsyzu has once again called out the 33-year-old and appears to be growing in confidence as he continues to improve on both his undefeated record and global reputation.
