Shawn Porter has weighed in with his thoughts on last month’s clash between Jake Paul and Tommy Fury in Saudi Arabia.
Former world champion Porter was working on part of ESPN’s commentary team at the Diriyah Arena, where Fury survived a point deduction and a final round knockdown to edge out a split decision win over Paul, who was also docked a point.
However, Porter told ID Boxing post fight that, contrary to the opinions of many, he believes the wrong man won on the night.
“I’m not a judge, and I truly do not know how to score a round when someone has had a point taken away from them.”
“Nonetheless, I had it back and forth and that there was some big moments that both men were able to capitalise on.”
“I actually had Jake Paul winning this fight. We actually saw Tommy get the win, which means we’re going to get the rematch. Even if Jake won the fight, he should still rematch Tommy Fury.”
“It’s probably the best boxing match that can be made for Jake at this point.”
Asked it the knockdown cemented the victory for Paul, Porter was adamant it had.
“Absolutely that’s what cemented it.”
‘The Problem Child’ has since confirmed that he intends to activate the contractual rematch clause, and there is early speculation the pair could lock horns again in July of this year.
Although respect was shown between the two young stars after the final bell, a degree of trash talking has already resurfaced, with members of Team Fury imploring Paul to pay out on the ‘double or nothing’ bet that was agreed at the press conference.
The Brit has also been linked to money spinning bouts with Paul’s elder brother Logan, as well as UK influencer and rapper KSI.
