After securing a December 19 showdown with Mexican star Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, Callum Smith believes he will demonstrate that he is the best super middleweight in the world.
WBA Super champion Smith admits that he was uncertain as to whether he was the front-runner to Canelo, with terms agreed at the eleventh hour prior to the Mexican’s public announcement for the pair to meet at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
“I thought that couldn’t be me when I saw it because I hadn’t agreed anything then,” Smith said to the Daily Mail. “They made us an offer a few hours after he put that out but I wasn’t happy with it. Thankfully we agreed to the fight in the end but even after I was still checking his Twitter to make sure it was me.”
“It depends on how you rate me. If you think I’m good you won’t be surprised. If you don’t rate me you’ll probably put this one up there. Canelo’s best days are at middleweight. At 168lbs I beat anybody. I’m the best in the world at this weight.”
