WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman says a match-up between new undisputed super-middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and unified light-heavyweight king Artur Beterbiev would be a ‘tremendous’ match-up.
Mexican star Canelo captured Caleb Plant’s IBF 168lbs title at the weekend via 11th round KO to be crowned undisputed champion in Las Vegas.
Russia’s Beterbiev is due to face Marcus Browne in Montreal on December 17, having defended his titles against Adam Deines with a 10th round TKO in March.
Sulaiman says a light-heavyweight bout between the champion pair is possible, with Canelo keen to push his boundaries and strengthen his already impressive legacy.
“It [Canelo-Beterbiev] would be a tremendous match,” Sulaiman told Sky Sports. “Beterbiev is undefeated, he is a heavy, heavy puncher.
“He would be a very strong threat to Canelo’s legacy. But Canelo wants to keep going further and further so let’s see.”
