Fresh off becoming a two weight world champion, Teofimo Lopez has taken yet another pop at Devin Haney, the man who could very well end up being his next opponent.
There is speculation that undisputed lightweight king Haney may decide to move up in weight to light welterweight, where Lopez now holds the WBO strap following his excellent win over Josh Taylor earler this month.
‘The Takeover’ has not been shy in criticising Haney, whom he also ranked as the easiest possible fight when compared to countrymen Shakur Stevenson and Gervonta Davis.
Speaking to Max Kellerman on ESPN, Lopez was in no mood for slowing up his assault on Haney, whom he mocked for a corner footage of him telling his dad that Vasiliy Lomachenko had worked out part of his plan.
“He sucks! Haney sucks! He’s a fake it till you make it type guy, and when the going gets tough – “Daddy, he’s figured me out” – that’s a punk.
I don’t understand it, why are we helping this kid? He’s a puppy.
I’m the youngest four belt era world champion, they copied and pasted it, then put it on Devin Haney.
Teofimo beat Lomachenko by unanimous decision. Devin Haney, unanimous decision. But Lomachenko won.”
The WBO give undisputed champions who move up in weight mandatory status for their belts, meaning a mouthwatering clash between Lopez and Haney in the next six to twelve months is a real possibility.
Lopez insists he is currently retired, though has not vacated his title and admits a big money offer could potentially tempt him back into the ring.
