Ryan Garcia continues to be the talk of the boxing world having secured a historic upset win at the end of April and now he has been sent an offer for a huge fight by Teofimo Lopez.
Garcia shocked the world when he reversed the odds to claim victory against Devin Haney. His behaviour in the lead-up to the fight meant many people had written him off and were even concerned about whether or not he should be fighting in the first place.
His mental health seemed unstable as he fired shots at anyone and everyone. However come fight night, he put in a fine performance, caught Haney early on and went on to knock him down three times on the way to a points win as well as a big betting win.
As Garcia was more than 3 lbs over the weight limit – which he claims was on advice given to him by Floyd Mayweather – he could not claim the WBC super lightweight title, which instead remains with Haney, but there is a good chance the pair could rematch sometime soon.
Speaking to Punsh Drunk Boxing, however, Lopez explained he has sent an offer to Garcia so could well jump the queue.
“I spoke to the team and I spoke with the lawyer for Top Rank I spoke to a group of them and I said exactly how I want it to pan out. We sent it to Ryan and the team we want to so something in September, December.
“It doesn’t even have to be necessarily in my weight class, it can be at a catchweight, and that way we don’t have to have any problems moving forwards.
“Everybody got psyched from what Ryan was doing. He played his part, he did his bit, he came out and did what he said he was going to do so congratulations to them, he played it smart, they’ve got their own plans so I’m just over here waiting but they’re gunna do what they will do but we’ll see what’s next.”
He was then asked if the fight between Garcia and Haney went how he thought it would.
“My prediction was it was all in the system and it would play out the way it was so I thought Haney would win. I’m actually happy the way it played out.
“With Ryan in the mix that makes it better. That doesn’t take away from Haney and what he’s done and his timeframe but he wanted to cash out.”
Lopez was last out with a win against with a 12-round unanimous points win over Jamaine Ortiz in February to retain his WBO super-lightweight title.
