Tommy Fury secured a WBC ranking after his win against Jake Paul and appears to be higher than first reported.
Fury’s well-documented placing in the cruiserweight WBC rankings was widely reported as number 39. However, it seems that those reports were inaccurate and that he has instead been placed higher in the ratings.
Ahead of Fury’s fight with Paul, the victor was promised a place in the WBC list, meaning that they would be considered to be in the top forty cruiserweights in the world, causing some backlash amongst fans.
Fury secured the spot after gaining victory by split-decision. Although despite news outlets claiming he would be positioned at #39, the 23-year-old has officially entered one place higher, at #38.
Originally, the position of #39 placed Fury above Viddal Riley (#40) in the rankings, sparking a call-out from the man placed last in the list. However, Fury’s updated position now also sees him ahead of Serdar Avci in the pecking order, despite the Turk holding a WBC International Silver title.
Avci, who also works as a promoter and matchmaker, boats a record of 14-0, with thirteen of those wins coming by knockout. The undefeated 37-year-old holds wins over former British champion and world title challenger, Danny Williams, as well as a number of wins in Ukraine, Turkey and Albania and will undoubtedly be frustrated that Fury’s win over Paul counts for more than his title in the eyes of the WBC.
As for Fury, it seems that a rematch against Paul is likely before the end of the year, if not another lucrative fight against British YouTuber KSI has been gaining momentum.
