Tony Bellew has revealed that talks have taken place over coming out of retirement for a return to the boxing ring, but feels it may not be able to happen.
Bellew had a fantastic career, with the pinnacle coming at the home of his beloved Everton when he stopped Ilunga Makabu in the third round to win the WBC cruiserweight title.
Following that victory at Goodison Park, Bellew stepped up to heavyweight and earned two memorable wins over David Haye, before ‘The Bomber’ then retired in 2018 after losing to undisputed cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.
Since then, there have always been rumblings over a potential return to the ring, with WBC bridgerweight champion Lukasz Rozanski touted as a potential opponent.
Rozanski is undefeated at 15-0 and in his last bout defended the title with a first round stoppage win over Alen Babic, and a fight with Bellew would give the Liverpudlian the chance to become a two-weight world champion.
‘The Bomber’ has now admitted to BoxingScene that talks to face Rozanski have taken place, but feels the possibility of coming out of retirement is now over.
“I kind of agreed it, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. It could have happened, but now I’m not too sure. I was toying with the idea of coming back for one night, just for him [Rozanski], but it looks like it’s dead in the water.
“It was just one night and maybe going out on my own terms. That was all it was about.”
Bellew has since gone on to have a successful career in broadcasting, acting as a regular pundit for Matchroom Boxing events on DAZN.
