Canelo Alvarez and Jaime Munguia are deep in camp for their upcoming fight and one top trainer closely involved in the fight has now boldly claimed ‘he can knock him out.’
After a lot of back and forth, Canelo finally announced that he would be taking on Munguia on his traditional Cinco De Mayo fight date.
He will be defending his undisputed super middleweight titles against a man who just knocked out John Ryder in his last fight, which is something Alvarez himself failed to do last year.
Ahead of the contest, Munguia’s legendary trainer and former Manny Pacquiao coach Freddie Roach spoke to FightHype of his excitement for the battle of the Mexicans.
“I love that fight.”
Roach was asked if he thought Canelo could be stopped for the first time in his career in the fight.
“Yes I do. He’s been hurt before, come on.”
It was put to him that Munguia’s style might pose the most problems for Canelo.
“Maybe not the most, I know his style will give him trouble and we look forward to it. We signed the contract one day out, that’s how bad we wanted that fight.”
He was then asked if Alvarez is the same fighter he always was.
“I think he’s fading a little but we’ll find out.”
Finally he was asked if Munguia would stop Canelo.
“No, I’m not expecting a knockout but I think he could knock him out. I’m back to work with him tomorrow.”
Canelo will have to be at his best to see off the challenge of the young and improving Munguia in this all-Mexican showdown.
