Abel Sanchez, Gennady Golovkin’s trainer, has been very vocal about the UK heavyweight boxing scene as of late. Obviously the big debate is Anthony Joshua versus Tyson Fury. Sanchez believes fans should definitely get behind Joshua instead of ‘The Gypsy King.’
“Absolutely, he’s a good looking guy, he’s a big guy, very well sculptured. He’s the kind of athlete that the fans don’t mind paying to see. When he gets in the ring, he does his job with his hands as well as any heavyweight in the world right now. When you have all of that put together, it makes it appealing to a fan and they are willing to pay because they are getting their money’s worth,” said the trainer in an interview with The Ropes Boxing Radio.
Fury has been through a lot since his 2015 victory against Wladimir Klitschko. Battles against mental health, drug abuse and anti-doping have postponed his return. ‘The Gypsy King’ has to deal with the UK Anti-Doping agency and the British Boxing Board of Control in order to get his license back. Until then, there is no guarantee date for his return.
Sanchez shows no sympathy for Fury.
“The guy that just retired or is semi retired who won some titles and got fat [Tyson Fury] and is talking all that stupid stuff, that’s not what the fans want to hear. It may sound funny to him, but I think the fans that are paying that good money to see them fight, they want their money’s worth, and I think that Joshua delivers that,” commented Sanchez.
While we still have to wait for the fight between Joshua and Fury to settle the debate once and for all, in the meantime we will witness the Klitschko-rematch possibly in October.
