St George’s Day saw Tyson Fury reminiscing about his 2022 scrap with his mandatory challenger and domestic rival, Dillian Whyte.
The bout at Wembley on April 23 saw 94,000 fans in attendance – a new record for stadium boxing attendance, surpassing that of Anthony Joshua’s 2017 win over Wladimir Klitschko by around 6,000.
It was an impressive feat given that it was one of the strangest promotions in recent memory, Whyte opting not to take part in any events before the final presser and weigh-in.
He surprised Fury and the fans on fight night by coming out in the southpaw stance for the first round. As tactics go, it wasn’t great, even with the shock value.
The champion quickly took control and finished things in the sixth with an uppercut that put the challenger straight on his back.
Speaking on Instagram Live, Fury said he’d be marking the occasion with intense training before getting ‘absolutely tanked.’
“Happy St George’s Day. Of course, it’s an anniversary for me today.
“It’s a year since I knocked out Dillian Whyte at Wembley in front of 94,000 people in London. So, I’m going to celebrate today with 15 rounds of boxing in the gym. Come on!
“Then I’m gonna go out, get my f***ing red, white, and blue suit on and I’m going to get absolutely tanked for England and Saint George. Get up!”
His promotional company, Queensberry, also celebrated the moment on year on.
The Whyte win was the first of two for Fury in that calendar year, later boxing Derek Chisora in an incredibly one-sided affair which he won by 10th round referee stoppage.
Recent hopes that he would be making more history – namely becoming the first four-belt undisputed heavyweight champion – were dashed when negotiations with the division’s other champion, Oleksandr Usyk, fell apart.
Fury is now reported to be returning to the ring in July for a title defence, with Andy Ruiz Jr being the front runner but China’s Zhilei Zhang also an option after his impressive victory over highly-ranked Joe Joyce.
Talks for the Usyk bout may then be revisited.
