Tyson Fury is seeking to regain his crown as the best heavyweight on the planet when he rematches Oleksandr Usyk later this year, and now his long-time cutman has given an update on the bout.
Fury came up short in his bid to become undisputed heavyweight champion last month when he lost a split decision to Usyk in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, also losing his WBC heavyweight title in the process.
There were questions whether a rematch would indeed take place, but it didn’t take Fury long to activate it, with the bout now scheduled to take place on December 21.
Jorge Capetillo has worked as Fury’s cutman for a number of fights, including his famous clash with Otto Wallin where he suffered a huge cut that Capetillo had to work wonders on throughout the bout.
The veteran cutman has now revealed a conversation he has had with Fury about the Usyk rematch, saying that he is more confident than ever that ‘The Gypsy King’ will come out on top on this occasion.
“I messaged him, and he is really good. Tyson said he was fine, back in the gym and is ready to rock and roll. He is ready to bounce back, and I know he will because he is a strong man. He should be able to bounce back from this loss and I couldn’t be more proud of him.
“He’s already conquered everything in boxing. He’s showed the world that anything can happen by coming back from his mental health to becom world champion again. After the three fights against Deontay Wilder, he has nothing to prove. He still has a lot of passion for boxing and I’m truly happy for him and know he will become undisputed champion of the world.”
Capetillo also shared his thoughts on what he feels Fury may need to do differently in the rematch, including whether changes need to be made in the corner.
“I think the pace, keep his hands up a little bit more, sit a little bit more and not jump too much. He can walk in instead of jumping and start boxing more, because he’s too big and heavy. You can jump for a couple of seconds but not for a couple of rounds.
“He needs to box more, keep his guard up and keep it tight. He’s the bigger man and he needs to push back Usyk. He was being efficient when he was pushing him back because he’s the bigger man.
“Sometimes for a fight like that, there can be chaos in the corner but it’s up to them to figure out who the boss is going to be. Sometimes the fighter can sometimes do what they think is best, but it’s on them for figure it out.”
Time will tell whether Fury can indeed gain revenge and defeat Usyk when they meet in their rematch later this year.
